Svaroopa®
Svaroopa® Yoga, (pronounced Swa-roo-pa), offers a significantly different paradigm in yoga poses. Swami Nirmalananda Saraswati describes Svaroopa® Yoga as “a technique for opening your body (roopa) to find your Self (sva). It utilizes a radically different approach than most modern styles of yoga and can give you a new way to think about asana practice. “
Svaroopa® is both physical and more than physical; focusing on the inner opening. Svaroopa® yoga poses release the tensions in the deepest layers of your body – the layers of muscles wrapped around your spine. It is often called “the Yoga of Bliss,” it is a yoga style that is accessible to everyone regardless of age, body type, fitness level, muscle or joint pain, people new to yoga or those experienced with other styles.
The Yoga Journal says, “This style of yoga teaches different ways of doing familiar poses, emphasizing the opening of the spine by beginning at the tailbone and progressing through each spinal area. Every pose integrates the foundational principles of asana, anatomy, and yoga philosophy, and emphasizes the development of transcendent inner experience, which is called svaroopa by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutra. This is a consciousness-oriented yoga that also promotes healing and transformation.”
Swami Nirmalananda, formerly known as Rama Berch, is the originator of Svaroopa® yoga as well as the Founder of Master Yoga, the Svaroopa® Vidya Ashram and the founding president of the Yoga Alliance. In 2009 she was honored with initiation into the ancient order of Saraswati monks.
